What is Youth Can Move the World?
Inspired by the United Nations declaration of the years 2005-2014 as the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development Youth Can Move the World is a symposium and a character–building forum where youth learn about —and become involved in— programs and activities focused on creating a world that is socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable. It is also designed to encourage and enable youth to engage with community-based organizations to explore opportunities to transform their interests into action through local volunteerism.
This free, one-day event, is open to all youth in Peel Region age 15 to 25 and will be held at the HJA Brown Education Centre (Peel District Board of Education offices) 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga on Saturday, February 23, 2008. The event also includes an “Agency Fair” which allows local, non-profit organizations to showcase their services, programs and volunteer opportunities to youth.
Peel’s first Youth Can Move the World Symposium, held in February 2006, brought more than 200 youth together as participants, performers and volunteers. And the 2008 event, supported by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, promises to extend the benefits to even more youth.
What are the benefits of the symposium?
The Symposium will engage youth in a learning for sustainable development and will promote and encourage social action toward achieving sustainable development within our communities. The Youth Can Move the World Symposium offers a host of benefits to our community and in particular to youth in Peel Region. These include:
- Developing youth self-esteem and leadership skills through volunteer roles in support of Youth Can Move the World.
- Increasing awareness about the need for new ways of being and acting, to achieve a sustainable world and moving youth into action on this account.
- Promoting youth service to the community through volunteerism with community agencies and/or creating self-generated projects.
Who’s behind it?
Youth Can Move the World was conceived by community volunteers, representatives of Peel social agencies, and members of the multi-faith community who recognized an unmet need to bring the United Nations messages for a sustainable world to youth in Peel. In 2007, Youth Can Move the World was privileged to receive an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant to support the Symposium in 2008 and 2009. Among our partners we are proud to include: Rapport Youth and Family Services, the Peel District School Board and Sheridan College. In addition to the OTF, we are proud to acknowledge the support of red lemon Hair Salon and the GoldLine Group of Companies.
